Machine one: laser cutter
I decided to use the laser cutter to make the numbers for the clock out of laser cut wood. Also originally I decided I was going to cover the 3D print with a decal but the numbers wouldn't stick to it so I replaced the decal with mat board. I just made the shapes and numbers in illustrator and cut them out. |
Machine two: vinyl cutter
I decided that I wanted a design on my clock and so I wanted to make a decal that would be the backdrop of the clock. Endgame was a movie that came out fairly recently and the filament I used was purple so I thought it would be funny to add Thanos. All I did was take a black and white vector image and put it in illustrator and cut it out. |
Machine three: 3D Printer
I decided that I wanted to print the frame of the clock with the 3D printer because I thought it would be a good way to design the cage for the clock mechanism. In inventor I created a disk 7 in in diameter then using my dimension of my clock part that I measured previously I created a box. Then I decided that in order to close it I would make a interlacing patter so that they cling together. |

What I learned
I learned that It is important to know the properties of the materials you are working with. For the whole time I believed that I was going to put vinyl on the filament and then put the numbers on the decal. This would not work because gluing the numbers to the decal wouldn't stick very well. Also I learned that with bigger prints it is easier for the 3D printer to warp the print. My clock got very warped but I did not have time to reprint it. This is where the mat board came in, not only did it hide the blemishes and warped side but it also provided a great surface for the numbers to glue to. Also I learned not to underestimate the amount of extra space you should give things for a 3D printer. Both times I printed the cover for the back, they didn't fit into each other because I didn't account as much for the filament not being as precise.
